
NY’s Katra Film Series to Close Out 7th Year on October 20th

The Katra Film Series will close out its 7th year with the 2018 Season Finale event on Saturday, October 20th. The event features works starring Laura Gomez from Orange Is The New Black and Russell Hornsby, recently named one of Variety Magazine’s Top 10 Actors to watch this year, who also stars in the much-‐anticipated The Hate U Give.
The Season Finale also includes diverse works from around the world with 75% of the filmmakers hailing from South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia. Additionally, 80% of the selections were written, directed and/or produced by a female.




Some of the highlighted works include Uniform, based on a short play by New York Times Bestselling author Jeffrey James Keyes and directed by Ellie Foumbi and Michael Niederman. The story follows two mothers who are at odds with what to do when their 6-‐year old son is sent home from school for wearing a dress. Dreamers, directed by Luis Luna, Angel Mendonza, and Daniel Valderrama, about the issues surrounding DACA students and their families in the Trump Era; I am The Only One, directed by Aicha Cherif, a short doc about a 15-‐year-‐old girl reconciling her fractious relationship with her mother after being sent to live in America with her grandparents because there were rumors in Guinea that she would be stolen to undergo female genital mutilation; Weak, directed by Emily Laue, throughout a single day, an independent woman is told repeatedly what she should be concerned with or aware of. And Augenblicke – a blink of an eye – a 2018 Student Academy-‐ Award Finalist, a short film dealing with sexual assault, three perceptions of only one truth -‐ hers, his and ours.
The final edition of the year also includes works by Tribeca and Sundance alums. The audience will vote for the best short to advance to the 7th Annual Grand Finale in January and the winner takes home prizes valued over $2,000 courtesy of 3636 Studios, International Screenwriters’ Association, and The Yard: Space to Work.
