Zikai has dropped the single “Champagne for Breakfast” off her debut EP Make You Mine.
The singer-songwriter was joined by the Grammy-winning Grades (Dua Lipa, H.E.R.) and Max Wolfgang (BTS, Ed Sheeran) on writing the track.
I caught up with Zikai about the idea behind the single and how she got started in music.
Tell me about the concept of “Champagne for Breakfast”
I wrote “Champagne for Breakfast” the day after I had a conversation with a friend about a problem he had with a girl he was dating.
It seemed like they only really got along during date nights when the champagne was flowing.
Every time they woke up or did something else the chemistry just didn’t feel like it did during the previous night. I thought that would be fun to write about if I also added my own experiences since I do find myself in that type of situation from time to time.
When did you start making music?
I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. But the creating process started sometime around 7th grade.
I learned three songs on the piano (one of them was “Un-thinkable” by Alicia Keys) and then I just changed the order and tempo of the chords in those songs and in that way I had my own instrumental I could write lyrics to.
And then you got your first record deal at 15…
I posted my first cover when I was fifteen and in some way a major label saw it and after a couple of months, I had my first record deal. It was special being that young.
I didn’t really know what I wanted my music to sound like or what I wanted to write about at that time. I hadn’t gone through that much in life and I was still an insecure teenager so I’m happy I didn’t release that much during that time.
I did learn a lot about the industry and I met people who I still work with today and for that I’m really thankful.
Do you draw from real life when you write?
Always. I’ve never even tried to write about something that’s not from real life. But never say never, maybe one day I’ll try it
How would you define your sound?
I almost always start my songs with an instrument, usually a guitar or piano so that’s pretty defining I would say. Other than that I write my lyrics after how I feel about something in the moment – in that way every song has it’s own feeling.
My dream is to collaborate with Drake since his album Take Care (2011) literally changed my life. I still to this day listen to that album at least 4 times a week.
Well, I have a music video coming shortly after the EP is released. Other than that I’m just excited to finally be releasing this EP and also happy that I can contribute with art, music and good vibes during these dark quarantine times. I’ve been writing a lot of songs so you will hear more from me even after this ep is released.
